About Nahari Silk Veils -
Nahari Silk Veils began in 1999. I was traveling with my teacher who uses the veil for meditation and dance and he never had enough veils so I began to buy silk and make them. I started to dye them and the demand for them grew and grew. With the advent of the internet my friends suggested a website and luckily I had a good deal of help to create the website. I think I was the first site to be dedicated to silk veils and soon I had so many orders. My artist background helped me to just play with color and experiment and just do it and the business side of Nahari Silk Veils just evolved out of demand. Now I dye up to 2,000 pieces a year with the help of an assistant. With my teacher and his workshops and events I have been able to see so many people, dancers and non- dancers enjoy the veils and the colors . If Monet or Kandinsky were still alive I think they would appreciate such opportunity to see colors of such contrast and compliment merging and passing and blending as people dance around with the veils. |
About Tamsin Murray -
I have loved dancing and painting and sculpture since I was a child. When I started to dye the veils it was a dream come true because it allowed me to create, color, dance, move, design, socialize, teach, write and travel all at once. Everywhere I travelled with my teacher people wanted veils and anything I made. I wrote a book and continue to write. I assist my teacher Adnan Sarhan as much as I can and I am able to travel and teach and use the veils in my work. Often the people I work with don't know about middle eastern dance and it is a really nice thing to be able to introduce it to them with the music and the veils. I used to sculpt and had a few exhibitions and people who liked collecting my work but I prefer to work with the silks because I can move with it, travel and be with people and teach in a very creative way. Nahari Silk Veils Ethics
Nahari Silk Veils is a small business and dedicated to bringing the luxury of silk to everyone. I recycle the original bags used to pack them and ship them to you using paper for the invoices that is recycled or is just blank on one side. If there are re - usable envelopes I use them. The dyes are non - toxic and their impact on the environment is reduced as much as possible by using the dyes until they are spent. I use white vingear to set the dyes and so the containers are recycled into plastic wood at a local factory. With my customers I try to do as well as I can to make it a good experience for them starting with reasonable prices, good communication, fair policies and flexible conditions so they can get what they need in the time they need them. Sometimes when I travel there may be some delays but we generally tend to everything as best we can. I give discounts to teachers and try to help especially if teachers are working with children that need a break.

About the Silk
The silk is Chinese and generally is of a very high quality. Silk is measured in weights called mummie or mm. In the US you can buy 5mm which is the lightest and many veils vary from 5mm up to 10 mm. I have mine made 4mm because this weight is delicate enough to float but still strong enough to last. I chose it because it was so sensitive and the lightness meant you could literally suspend time with the way it could move so slowly. The other weights need more force and power and some dancers like that but this gives you a range of movement that is so expansive. You can whip it around and create the effect of fire or you can make it float like clouds. It challenges you to dance in ways you could not if you have to move so quickly to keep it off the ground. It's lightness is warm as well and it makes a perfect sarong or wrap or cover for when you just feel to wear something that is so soft and shimmering. Except for a few veils that are sold saying they are not dyed by me, all the veils are hand-dyed. The richness of the colors is created by doing them sometimes three or four times to get the depth and they need to be treated as a hand-dyed product which means to follow the instructions on the labels and hand wash them. For the half circle veils. These are 3 yds by 54" wide and are the same wieght of silk. The circular side of the veil is surged to create a strong hem. The silk for every size, 2yds, 3yds and 3.5yds is the same. And for the skirts I use 8mm as it is light without being too sheer.

About P.U.R.E and Skywater.
I met up with Kaeshi in New York, over veils, and we spent a good time oohing and aahing over all the veil colors and blends. A long time passed and an email appeared with a wonderful photo of all these women dancing in a public square in Manhattan, with blue veils on their hips. We met again to talk about "Pure", a rapidly growing community of women who dance together in public spaces for world peace. To express my affiliation and appreciation for this group I offer the blue veil "Skywater" at a discounted price. It is the color that the organization uses for their performances. Any movement that helps to express and support the desire for world peace is a worthwhile movement, especially when it involves moving the hips, the belly and the community spirit.
